This guide is a little different to the other of our seasonal events roundups, because we know that firstly, 6 weeks can feel like a REALLY long time before school restarts and also, we know just how flippin’ expensive it can be!

So in our BUMPER roundups of what you can do with the kids this Summer in the Dales, you’ll not only find all of the details of the local attractions, but you’ll find ideas for free activities to fill a sunny day, cheap activities that don’t cost the earth and of course you’ll find all the best attractions based in and around the Yorkshire Dales for a top treat day out!

Totally Free Days Out

These totally free days out do exactly what they say on the tin! They are FREE!

That means no parking costs, entry fees or anything.

We have put together some ideas of how you can fill a fun family day out for free this Summer. Think parks, picnics, paddling, nature reserves, bug hunts and bird spotting. You’ll find totally free trails and community events too! You can almost certainly fill a day for free in the Yorkshire Dales!

Whatever you choose to do, make sure you leave no trace and take all your rubbish home with you. No BBQs are allowed within the National Park boundaries or on Ilkley Moor.

(When calculating for attractions with individual entry fees, I have calculated for a family of four, which is what we are!.)

You will find days out for those who love adventure, the weird and the wonderful and for those who want to pay a visit to some of the awesome Yorkshire attractions that are located in and around the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

We have arranged all of the days out in cost order, starting from the lowest and ranging right up to the full on bucket list treat days out!

Helpful Information!

⭐ We hope you enjoy our walks, but please exercise common sense as routes can change with the weather conditions and seasons! The routes have been walked by our own two feet, but you know your own limits. Always take a back-up map, don’t rely on GPS alone, wear appropriate clothing for the weather and take adequate snacks and refreshments with you (although as a parent, I know you already know that bit!)

⭐ Leave no trace! Take nothing away and leave nothing behind, take all rubbish home with you.

⭐ If you choose to paddle, be aware of bio security. Always wear clean dry water shoes (if worn) to avoid cross contamination of species between watercourses, this is a particular issue in the Yorkshire Dales, to help protect the white clawed crayfish.

⭐ If you decide to paddle, be aware that wild water can be dangerous, and water levels will vary season to season. Always supervise children around water. Check out the safety information on the Royal Life Saving Society website.
