Middleton Woods, Ilkley
Middleton Woods in Ilkley are one of our favourite places to walk in Spring time, once the bluebells are out and the entire floor is carpeted in blue.
But don’t underestimate it at all times of year because these woods are something special! This family friendly walk will also take you alongside Ilkley riverside where there are stones to throw and splashing to be done!
Middleton Woods in Ilkley are amazing in bluebell season!
But even if you can’t get there in April to see the bluebells, there is still so much fun to be had all year round!
Middleton woods has been a favourite of The Reluctant Explorers since they themselves were little monkeys! The woods begin at Denton Road in Ilkley, and stretch upwards across to the other side of Curly Hill. There is no route as such on a map, but if you use the gradient of the ground as your guide you won’t get lost.
Limited parking is available on the verge on Denton Road if you want to make this route shorter (but it can get very muddy). We prefer to park a short distance down the road on New Brook Street near the bridge. Best bit about this, is that you get to enjoy the riverbank as part of your walk (and you can grab a coffee from New Brook Street Deli before you set off!)
UPDATE April 2026: The nature reserve has had some additional areas sectioned off and improvements made to some of the path perimeters to ensure that the edges are clear. This is in some way to help protect the bluebells here and also to help protect the nature reserve in general. Please adhere to any signage placed on designated wild areas.
A Word About Bluebells
Do not trample the bluebells. There are too many ‘photo-op’ areas that have been squashed flat. It can take years for these flowers to recover.
Do not pick bluebells. The native species is protected and it is in fact illegal to uproot a plant.
Stick to the paths. This will prevent the bluebells being trampled and you can still get an awesome photo without damaging anything on your way!

Thank you for taking the time to have a look at my website and for reading this now!
I set up the Reluctant Explorers and maintain the website and attached social media accounts in my spare time, around mum-life and two jobs. It was designed to provide access for parents to free resources to help get more families outside and exploring in nature. These walks have all been created by myself and the kids and we have walked each one ourselves (and re-walk them regularly to keep the information as up to date as we can).
If you would like to support us and can afford a few pennies, you can make a donation to our ‘Buy Me a Coffee’ page. Simply tap the button below to head there!

Directions to Middleton Woods from Ilkley
Remember to use a back up map.
The starting point for this walk is the bridge over New Brook Street. Take a look around, on one side of the bridge is the play park, on the other is the skate park and rugby club. This walk guide starts you on the opposite side of the river to the skate park but in reality both paths will eventually lead you to Middleton Woods.
Take the steps down onto the surfaced path. On your left is the river, follow the path along the river until you reach the iron suspension bridge. Below here is a great little place to stop for a minute or two to throw in stones on the stony bank of the river. Sometimes you might find ducks too!
Cross the suspension bridge, and then cross Denton Road 🛑 Denton Road can get busy, take care when crossing. The entrance to Middleton Woods is marked by a signpost and is clearly visible ahead.
Once inside, the world is your oyster, but we never really leave Middleton Woods without heading to the rope swing, so that’s our first calling point! After the sign saying ‘Middleton Woods’, keep to the right of it, and take the first main path you see to your right. Follow that and you’ll reach the clearing with a large fallen tree trunk to balance on and the rope swing.
Continue on from there along the main path as it climbs through the woods, then head left, as the path takes you in a loose circle around the woodland. There are SO many options here, even for major paths, just make sure you don’t wander too far off piste and end up in a pile of bluebells!
If you want to extend the walk further, you can cross the road and head into the upper woods, but we usually find plenty to explore in the lower woods.
Dependant on where you explore, you could find stick dens, rope swings, streams, bridges, all sorts to keep little ones entertained! The woods are also teeming with wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled. We’ve spotted deer and gigantic hare in the woods before. Once you have explored the woods thoroughly, head back to the entrance sign where you originally entered the woods. Head back out onto Denton Road.
Cross the road, and turn right. Shortly there will be a path heading alongside the river on your left. Here there are loads of spots to get down to the river to throw in stones. Be warned that on a sunny, hot weekend, the river bank can get extremely busy.
The River Wharfe here has achieved bathing status due to its popularity, so from May 2021, it has been subjected to regular water quality testing. However, there have been ongoing issues with the water quality around the suspension bridge and in the entire bathing area, so if you want to paddle, head further upstream. There is no guarantee that the water will be clean at any point, although Yorkshire Water have started a huge change to the infrastructure of the sewage and wastewater treatment in Ilkley which is supposed to be completed in 2027. Information accurate as of Jan 2026- source www.gov.uk.
Once you have had a good stone throwing session, or maybe even a picnic, head back towards New Brook Street Bridge and take the steps back up to the road where you started (just remember to leave no trace)

⭐ We hope you enjoy our walks, but please exercise common sense as routes can change with the weather conditions and seasons! The routes have been walked by our own two feet, but you know your own limits. Always take a back-up map, don’t rely on GPS alone, wear appropriate clothing for the weather and take adequate snacks and refreshments with you (although as a parent, I know you already know that bit!)
⭐ Leave no trace! Take nothing away and leave nothing behind, take all rubbish home with you.
⭐ If you choose to paddle, be aware of bio security. Always wear clean dry water shoes (if worn) to avoid cross contamination of species between watercourses, this is a particular issue in the Yorkshire Dales, to help protect the white clawed crayfish.
⭐ If you decide to paddle, be aware that wild water can be dangerous, and water levels will vary season to season. Always supervise children around water. Check out the safety information on the Royal Life Saving Society website.
